Background of the Study
Online learning has become increasingly popular, especially in universities like Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, located in Bauchi LGA, Bauchi State. However, with the growth of online education, ensuring academic integrity during online examinations has become a significant challenge. Traditional proctoring systems, which involve physical invigilators, are not feasible in online settings due to logistical challenges.
AI-based proctoring systems are emerging as a potential solution to this issue. These systems use artificial intelligence technologies such as facial recognition, keystroke analysis, and behavior monitoring to detect cheating and ensure that online exams are conducted fairly. The application of AI in proctoring promises a more efficient, cost-effective, and secure approach to maintaining the integrity of online examinations at universities like ATBU.
Statement of the Problem
ATBU faces challenges in maintaining the integrity of online examinations, with increasing concerns over cheating and the reliability of current proctoring methods. While AI-based proctoring systems have shown promise, their effectiveness in ensuring fairness and accuracy in online exams has not been fully investigated at ATBU.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the effectiveness of AI-based proctoring systems in ensuring academic integrity during online examinations at ATBU.
2. To assess students' and faculty’s perceptions of AI-based proctoring systems for online examinations.
3. To propose recommendations for the effective implementation of AI-based proctoring systems at ATBU.
Research Questions
1. How effective are AI-based proctoring systems in ensuring academic integrity during online examinations at ATBU?
2. What are the perceptions of students and faculty regarding AI-based proctoring systems?
3. What challenges are associated with the implementation of AI-based proctoring systems at ATBU?
Research Hypotheses
1. AI-based proctoring systems will effectively detect cheating and ensure academic integrity during online examinations at ATBU.
2. Students and faculty will have varying levels of acceptance and trust in AI-based proctoring systems.
3. The implementation of AI-based proctoring systems will face technological, ethical, and logistical challenges at ATBU.
Significance of the Study
This research will contribute to the growing body of knowledge on AI-based proctoring systems and their role in improving online examination integrity. The findings will inform ATBU’s decision-making on whether to adopt such systems, addressing concerns related to fairness, privacy, and effectiveness.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the evaluation of AI-based proctoring systems in online examinations at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, located in Bauchi LGA, Bauchi State. The study will be limited to undergraduate students and will not involve postgraduate examinations or non-examination assessments.
